Shred is a conceptual photography project inspired by the symbolic act of shedding, drawn from the natural process of a snake releasing its skin. The purpose of this photoshoot is to visually express how human beings continually reinvent themselves, beginning anew after each cycle.
For this project, I developed a custom dress based on a concept by art designer Sao Khue. The garment was crafted to evoke a fragile, organic layer between skin and fabric, suggesting vulnerability and the emergence of a new self.
The project involved a full production team, including a photographer, a lighting designer, a set crew, a makeup artist, a model, and assistants.
My participation in this project was the design and construction of a costume aligned with the core creative direction established by the art designer. I began by researching organic materials, textile manipulation, and patterns that could evoke a worn yet living membrane. Experimentation was essential for this project because it involved a textile manipulation and draping to achieve a shredding effect. One of the biggest challenges with the garment was balancing fragility with durability, ensuring that the piece would withstand movement during the shoot without being damaged. The collaborative nature of this project required strong coordination from the whole crew.
This project allowed me to deepen my understanding of conceptual costume design within a larger production environment. Working alongside a big creative team taught me the value of interdisciplinary communication, especially in aligning costume design with a narrative direction. I experimented with fragile materials and created textile manipulation with organza. Overall, the experience strengthened my ability to translate abstract conceptual frameworks into tactile garments and reinforced my appreciation for collaborative storytelling in visual fashion projects.
